Neeraj Chopra Highlights, Javelin Throw Final, Paris 2024 Olympics: Arshad Nadeem takes gold with new Olympic Record, Neeraj Chopra wins silver with 89.45m

Neeraj Chopra wins silver medal at Paris 2024 Olympics javelin throw; Arshad Nadeem breaks record for gold - as it happened

Arshad Nadeem crowned Olympic champion in Paris, ends campaign with another 90m+ throw
Arshad Nadeem, who set an Olympic record of 92.97m with this second attempt to pull clear of the rest of the field, held on to secure the Olympic men’s javelin throw gold medal. Pakistan’s first Olympic medal winner since Barcelona 1992 ended the night with another gigantic 91.79m throw on his final attempt!

Even Nadeem’s last throw would’ve seen him break the Olympic record held by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway (90.57m in Beijing 2008) had it not been bettered by himself earlier in the final!

Neeraj Chopra settles for silver!

Neeraj Chopra fails to make it two gold medals in a row and despite the second-best throw of his career with 89.45m on his second attempt, it wasn’t enough to beat Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan who crossed the 90m mark twice and set a massive Olympic record.

The 26-year-old becomes the fifth two-time Olympic medallist from India after adding a silver to his Tokyo 2020 gold medal. Only Norman Pritchard, Sushil Kumar, PV Sindhu and Manu Bhaker have achieved the same with the latter claiming two bronze medals at Paris 2024 Olympics.

He is also only the third athlete besides Sushil and Sindhu to win medals at two separate Summer Games.

Paris 2024 surfing: All results, as Tatiana Weston-Webb, Brisa Hennessy and Carissa Moore lead women advancing into quarter-finals Paris Olympics

What happened in women’s round 3 at Teahupo’o

In heat one, Team USA’s Marks (6.93), competing in her second Olympic Games after finishing fourth at Tokyo 2020, advanced over the 15–year–old Yang Siqi (1.63) from the People’s Republic of China, ending a historical run by the young surfer.

In heat two, Australia’s Tyler Wright (11.10) scored the first tube rides of the day to jump to the top of the leaderboard over Israel’s Lelior Anat (7.74), who had been leading with strong frontside carves under the lip.

In heat three, France’s Defay (9.00) advanced over compatriot Fierro (7.54), upsetting the local Teahupo’o star who, despite scoring some of the best tube rides of the day, was unable to find a strong second-wave score. After her loss, an emotional Fierro was already looking ahead: “I feel so loved [here in Tahiti]. This is just one step in my career and I still have a big year ahead of me trying to qualify for the Championship Tour and the next Olympics.”

In heat four, Team USA’s defending Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion Moore (8.16) dominated the round to advance over Sarah Baum (3.87) as the South African was unable to find her rhythm.

In heat five, Spain’s Erostarbe (8.34) advanced over Japan’s Shino Matsuda (5.84) at the top of the heat with Matsudo unable to catch up.

In heat six, one of the most anticipated of the day, Brazil’s Weston-Webb (12.34) turned in one of the day’s most impressive performances right at the start, including a clean tube ride followed by a big, committed carve to close out the wave. She advanced over Team USA’s Simmers (1.93), who was unable to find the waves she needed, marking a disappointing end to the world No. 1-ranked surfer’s Olympic bid.

In heat seven, it was Brazil versus Brazil ,with Silva (6.77) advancing over compatriot Taina Hinckel (5.93) in an evenly matched battle that saw Silva smart with her wave selection.

In heat eight, Costa Rica’s Hennessy (12.34) advanced over Yolanda Hopkins (9.90) matching the top combined score of round 3 as the surf picked up. Hennessy has shown herself to be a fierce compettor, as she also earned one of the top combined scores in round 1.

Paris Olympics 2024: ‘Right on the Mani!’ Manika Batra becomes first Indian paddler to reach pre-quarterfinals

India paddler Manika Batra outclassed Prithika Pavade in the table tennis women's singles round of 32 match of the ongoing Paris Olympics.

Indian table tennis player Manika Batra dominated Prithika Pavade of France in the women’s singles round of 32 matches at the Paris Olympics. She secured a convincing 4-0 victory over her French counterpart, winning the match with scores of 11-9, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-7.

Batra recovered from a two-point lag to win the first game 11-9. The Indian player then comfortably won the second game with a five-point lead. Despite Pavade’s efforts to fight in the third game, Manika Batra clinched it 11-9.

In the Round of 64, Manika Batra defeated Great Britain’s Anna Hursey. The 29-year-old Batra delivered a strong performance, winning with a score of 11-8, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, advancing to the round of 32.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Olympics Khel wrote, “Right on the Mani. Manika Batra becomes the first Indian paddler to reach the Round of 16 in Olympics history.”

Batra maintained her composure under pressure throughout the match. The third game was particularly tense, with the young Anna Hursey leading 8-7 at one point. However, Batra remained calm and clinched the game 11-9 on her second game point.

In the fourth game, Batra started strong, quickly gaining a 5-1 lead. However, Hursey managed to rally and take the lead at 6-5. The lead exchanged hands several times, and Hursey eventually clinched the game 11-9, staging a significant comeback.

Undeterred by the setback, Batra regained her focus and determination in the fifth game. She dominated with an 11-5 win, securing her overall victory. This triumph moves Batra into the round of 32, where she aims to continue her impressive performance and progress further in the competition.

After the match, Batra said, “I am happy that I beat a French player in Paris. I defeated a higher-ranked player. I did not think of creating history and making the pre-quarters, there are more rounds, I will take it match by match and give my best as I always do.”

“I had planned to play to her forehand as discussed with my coach but I was getting the points on her backhand, so I did not change the tactics. I did play a few shot on her forehand too, I did not want her to think that I am playing only on her backhand,” she told PTI.

“It was a tough match. Staying relaxed helps me both on and off the court. I do breathing exercises that help me during the match. I will give my best whoever I play against in the next round,” Batra added.
